Have you ever wondered which fruits and vegetables are safe for you dog? I know that my little pooch watches me intently while I’m eating, waiting for one little morsel to hit the floor. Today we will discuss the Fruits And Vegetables That Are Safe For Dogs.

I was rather surprised when I started researching this topic. Most fruits and vegetables seem to be not only safe for our four-legged friends, but they are also just as healthy for them as they are for us. I was under the impression that they might not be able to digest the food we eat however, I was wrong. We just need to keep in mind that while most of them are safe,  there are some fruits and vegetables that need to be avoided or given in moderation.

  • Apples

    • Raspberries should be given in small amounts. They contain Xylitol which is a sweetener. This is toxic to dogs in large amounts.

  • Cherries
    • Cherry plants contain cyanide and are toxic to dogs. Cyanide disrupts cellular oxygen transport, which means that your dog’s blood cells can’t get enough oxygen. If your dog eats cherries, watch for signs of cyanide poisoning which are dilated pupils, difficulty breathing, and red gums.
  • Grapes
    • Grapes and raisins have proved to be very toxic for dogs. In fact, grapes are so toxic that they can lead to acute sudden kidney failure.
  • Citrus Fruits
    • Citrus fruits like lemon, lime and grapefruit are very acidic and can cause stomach upset in animals.

  • Bell peppers (red, green, yellow)

    • Carrots are very low in calories and are good for dog’s teeth.

  • Rhubarb and Wild Mushrooms also contain toxins.
  • Corn is a common allergen among pets so it should be avoided.

In conclusion, small amounts of fruits and vegetables that are safe for dogs can be incorporated into your pet’s regular food at meal times, or pea-sized pieces of fruits or vegetables can be given to your pet as a healthy, low-calorie snack. I know that they will love you for it!
